The Artist

Melanie is a self-taught artist working in oils. Always present in her work is "emotional essence". Moments are "told" through use of colour, light and composition.

Her work has been described as romantic, passionate and fresh. "A pretty scene may not necessarily inspire me. It is the places and experiences I feel I HAVE to paint that end up on canvas," Melanie says.

Melanie Jane is a full-time artist working from her home studio in Maple Ridge where she also teaches painting to people of all ages. Her work is exhibited in galleries, and she participates in shows in the Lower Mainland and in Alberta. Melanie’s paintings can be found in private collections worldwide.

Artist Statement

"I wasn’t sure how I would pursue my art on a full-time basis once there were children to consider. I only knew I had to paint somehow, every day.

However, when the babies arrived, I packed them up and we ventured off seeking subject material down dykes, over paths and grassy hills, along creeks and ocean sides. Not surprisingly, my children have ended up in many paintings.

I had a defining moment one day sitting in my studio. The kids were dancing around pretending to be frogs and kangaroos. It was difficult to concentrate, but I suddenly realized that I had managed to find the balance for my two greatest loves—my family and my painting. They go together. My inspiration, my joy, my challenge, my passion. Time can always be made for the things you love."
